We also started guided reading books today. some students may come home today with new beautiful books. Please read this at least once this weekend to practise fluidity and fluency.
Today we got creative in finding different kinds of objects for Science. We had to find things that were opaque, translucide, et transparent. Students looked in their lunchkits, inside of classrooms, investigated objects for different parts that may not be obvious. We ran around and tried to find as many things as possible! Super fun!

Well this week you may have noticed the spelling tests come home a bit differently. This week I thought I would try giving tests on Socrative - a site that allows students immediate feedback. Initially - I didnt think this would be something that would interest them....however, just as research suggests, students appreciate immediate feedback. I definitely saw a reflection in their scores - if they made a mistake on the first question, and IMMEDIATELY SAW their mistake - they were able to correct that for the future words, often with the same spelling rule. Is this cheating? Well, I guess there is something to be said of memorizing ALL of the words, but if you are able to be reminded early on, the chance of that feeling of success for all that followed is likelier to allow that rule to stay than if you fail all of them because you forgot the rule.
I don't know - I suppose that is why we call this a pilot - as I often explain to the students. I want to try lots of different ways to do lots of the same things - see what works, what intrigues this generation - and computers, by and large, do this. Today we were learning about lights and shadows, and while every year I show a bill nye, and while there are many students that tune in, they have never quite tuned in like they did today on their Chromebooks - because today they got to tune in at their own pace - rewind, turn it up, turn it down...be closer. It was theirs; they were in charge of their learning in that moment. We learnt about post it notes on the computer - although they didn't all work but it was a trial! Today we celebrated a couple of months of learning to listen at appropriate times. We spent the afternoon in PJ's and watched the Lorax (which also happens to be a great culminating video for our science unit!).
This morning, to pay respect, we stayed in our nice every day clothes and changed after lunch. Thank you to two amazingly caring girls who brought Hot Chocolate and Popcorn for the entire class! What an awesome random act of kindness on this day! This weekend some of us have homework - Math - Subtraction with regrouping, as well as finishing our Social Studies maps. These need to come back to school on Wednesday finished please. I hope everyone has a great long weekend and gets rested. Is it just me or does November just seem to be a very exhausting month? Well - I hope everyone feels rested Wednesday . Oh one last note the students will certainly be wondering... Chromebooks in Room 30 next week! :) I promise! Hello Friends! Well November is here. It is crazy to think it is November already. Students had a substitute yesterday as I was away at We Day with Grade 6's from our school and 16 000 other kids from all over Alberta. it is not the best way for students to start the week - with a sub, but we talked about it at great length this morning and had a much better day today.
Students have evidently been working very hard on their science projects and I am really excited to see them all tomorrow after noon at 1 oclock in the gym. I hope to see you all there! |
