I am sooo proud of you all today! I feel good that we just connected with the whole school, we made connections and perhaps relationships with teachers and students that might not have happened. This is something I hope you take forward, in continuing to go out of your way to make someone's day. I heard many times over today after school that that was a pretty special moment in their day. Thank you for being such great role models and leaders in our school and community!
I believe it is hard to teach why we do appreciations by sitting in the classroom and perhaps unauthentically handing them out.So today we thought of some reasons teachers in the school make this a place we want to be and handed out appreciations with a flower to many of the teachers in the school. Students came to each class, randomly chosen, and came up with an appreciation and went to that class and told them why they are thankful for that person. I am sooo incredibly proud of this group that did this task so fearlessly. I love the courage and support they gave eachother as they went to eachothers rooms without sometimes knowing the teacher, or being in front of all those students. Wow! They each came back to the classroom feeling good about themselves as well and really - this is the lesson - when we are kind and good to others it makes us feel good and what could be better than feeling good ?!

Wow! What an awesome place to come to every day. I hope that you all enjoy being up here in Room 30 as much as I do; to get to be with such amazing people every day.
Today was a very full day! I saw many Flat Selves come to school - not all of them however, so please make sure you get these in in some way...usb key, google drive, printed... do what you have to do :) We will start writing about some awesome adventures this week. We read in our novels today and are on chapter 3 - make sure you get your questions for chapter two done... easy peasy 5 questions. ... please make sure you are doing French and English home reading and marking it down. Your forms are due Next Tuesday to show me how awesome at Reading you have been! I saw a few stickers in class today too! Wow! We will start a chain to demonstrate our successes this year... let's see how long we can make it. Alright so our Flat Selves are on their way home to find adventure and trouble. Flat selves are due back Monday. The more pictures the more fun and more interesting our travel journals will be (hopefully). We will be working on writing skills. .. not on the computer.Oh yes! And IN FRENCH please is where the writing will take place.
We finished some amazing art projects today! I am stoked to show the pictures. We also... did some math... place value. My goodness, you best be tired today as I am absolutely starving and exhausted so the post is short today in order to clean up and get ready for an amazing day tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a performance by the Irish Guard Band out on the field hopefully weather permitting. Scholastic orders are due tomorrow :) ...having fun yet? I hope so! I am loving getting to know you all! Alright so here's the thing... I looked into some new cameras and the newer models will be arriving in October and well... I know that my blog is pretty interesting all on its own, but I am stoked to be putting pictures. So by November I will be posting amazing photos and we will likely be starting to create some awesome videos by then as well. Patience :)
Today we did our first real art project. I say real like that because unless you get messy and it takes a whole team to clean up I don't really think it is art :P I like paint and pastels and... creativity. The creativity comes in the moments between the brush and the paint colour choosing. We learned a little bit about Monet and Impressionism and are now creating our own awesome piece of works. We did not finish but that is my fault as we had to have a snack break. Yes it is true I did bring treats today but only because I was sitting at home reading late last night thinking of how exhausting it is to be doing work, even reading, in the heat. I was thinking of my amazing students who power through it every day and do so with fewer complaints than I often have. I just think it is absolutely outstanding and while not all the students liked the treat I choose (fruit bars with Real fruit!)... I think the gesture was appreciated by all. Students started their spelling booklets today - with our official first spelling test on Tuesday. Spelling words can be found on the homework page, but also games can be played on the spellingcity site under my username (rmlhoule). Chose the green or the yellow list based on what colour paper you received today. There is also now a SpellingCity APP! Pretty rad if you ask me! Please continue to use mathletics during our trial so I can see if this is something I find a way to fund. ...what else did we do today??... boy if it is hard for me I can only imagine how hard it is for the students to remember as the day wears on! We will be bringing our Flat Stanley's home this week so get prepared to be little journalers... and not lame authors :P So the news today is that I have signed students up for Mathletics.ca - this is an amazing math website. The catch is that we are only on a trial so I am trying to get as much use out of the trial, and collect as much data as possible throughout this two week trial as possible. So please, if you have time, have students log onto their mathletics account at home. I will send out usernames and passwords via email that you provided to me last week.
The site is game based and 100% Alberta curriculum which is amazing! It is English which makes it a great resource at home in the event you do not speak French, and it also allows students to be matched and play against other students at their level around the world if they so choose. We worked on our Flat Stanley's today - I think the students are getting excited about taking their Flat Selves home next week to write their first entry about what they will be doing. We presented a few more Me bags and have a few left to do yet. We decided to do a preparation activity with the Dictee words this week and postpone our first dictee until next week since last night was a late night for some of us and I can have compassion ;) Please please check out mathletics and keep working on your xtramath.org. Raz-kids can be done at home anytime as well. Alright! So I finally have some pics up, no thanks to my camera! Hopefully I find a new cord or camera soon to simplify this process.
We did some more Me presentations and I have definitely been learning a lot! We started a Flat Stanley project. We will be sending our Flat Selves around the world this year hopefully. Today we started colouring our flat selves and this weekend we will be bringing them home to hang out with us and write about how incredible we are when we are not at school. We will also be taking photos and so long as everyone has a USB key or access to their computer at home, students will learn the necessary skills of uploading photos and I will take care of printing. I hope students had an awesome day today starting all kinds of projects. We started our social studies project about famous Albertans today with the other grade 4 class as well. I hope to see many of you this evening at the Welcome Back BBQ! Well I am back and yes Me Bag presentations started today! We didn't do all of them but we will get to them throughout the week. I definitely learned some things about you all that I had no clue about ! I loved the photos you brought! If anyone would like to share photos with the class that we can hang throughout the year and share with the class feel free to bring these. We will be starting this week with dictée 1. All the words are written in agendas and will be posted on the homework tab (les devoirs) under dictée in the event you would like to read them off the computer or have forgotten your agenda (which I know will never happen with this group). So I finally get to start taking some pictures and my camera cord is not functioning... so stay tuned as there will be photos when I upgrade cameras... or perhaps can track down a new cord. Wow! It was cooking in here today let me tell you! My Kagan Thermometer said 38 by the end of the day. Unreal! We had lots of breaks outdoors today :P
We finally all have access to the computers and will be starting some projects soon. A few minor computer issues but should be sorted out by Monday. Thank you so much for making my day with beautiful Orange flowers! Wow! unreal! Still making my day actually. Well I can only hope that your children come home as excited as I am at the end of the day.If it wasn't for how awesome the day was I am not sure how I would get here every day. I can't believe how incredible this group is already!!! Today we started out with our daily routine. It took a bit longer than it will regularly take, but that's the thing about the second day of school... it is new and exciting. We introduced partners and hopefully all learned something new about one another ... like how many of you want to go to Australia Mental Note ;))) I was invited to play soccer and that was pretty cool after all of our conversations about inclusion to be included was an awesome feeling. I hope that is something that you all do often because that was kind of a highlight of my day to play soccer with you all. Thank you. I also may have tried to be a shoemaker and fix a shoe but... my only resources were tape and... well... you be the judge. We started reading Clément aplati but it was a bit of a hard sell in the heat this afternoon. But I know it will get better when you find out what we will be doing next... We also did a mad minute just to show off our mad skills! Please finish writing in your journals if you are not finished. This will be a weekly affair, so getting behind at this point is just going to be a bad start to the year. I know all of you have many other obligations, which is why I don't generally assign homework. I do assign time to work in class and you have the choice to do it in the evening by talking or doing other things during class time or to do it then while I am available to help. Please ensure you are caught up on assignments as otherwise multiple late and unfinished assignments mean you will miss out on activities. Have a great evening! |
